PRESIDENT’S CHAMPAGNE MOMENTS

This award was introduced by our late President Jim Johnson and is carried on by our current President

Robert Sowray. It is decided by the President alone, to represent one special memorable moment in the season. A difficult choice when often there are so many moments to remember. Previous winners of this award are shown.

2018Rob NicholsonOn a beautiful sunny 1st September day, Studley Royal visited the picture postcard Bolton Percy ground. We batted first on a difficult wicket and scored 270 for 8 with Rob Nicholson top scoring with 113 before being bowled. Bolton Percy replied with 244 for 9 meaning a Studley Royal winning draw with 27 points gained, and a 4th spot finish in the Premier Division, while the 19 points gained by Bolton Percy was not enough to prevent them being relegated to Division 1. The President enjoyed the Rob Nicholson determined innings and awarded the 2018 Presidents Champagne Award to Rob ‘Pup’ Nicholson.
2017James ClarksonAt Driffield, on the 6th May, we found ourselves 14 for 2. Anthony Mackle joined James Clarkson at the crease and together put on a 218 run partnership. James carried his bat throughout the innings remaining 115 Not Out, with a team total of 269 for 3. Driffield replied with 215 for 6. Well batted James.
2016Rob MackleOn a beautiful sunny day at Clifton Alliance, Matt Coad lifted the Hunters Premier League Cup, after convincingly beating Easingwold. Studley Royal scored 277 for 4, with Rob Mackle scoring 107 and James Clarkson 83. This was followed by a great team bowling display, led by Charles Scatchard figures of 6 for 32, resulting in Easingwold being bowled out for 170 and a 107 run victory for Studley Royal. Many memories of a wonderful day with the highlight being the 107 scored by Rob which resulted in the deserved Man of The Match trophy being awarded to him.
2015Matt Coad2015 was a difficult season for the 1st team and any hopes of promotion to the new ECB Yorkshire League had long evaporated by the last game of the season, when bottom place in the YDSCL Premier Division was possible. Rob Nicholson had stepped down as captain and Matt Coad had temporarily taken charge. In the last match of the season against York on a beautiful late September day, a much needed victory was gained. Matt Coad earned his first victory as captain, much of it due to his wonderful bowling display of 7 for 46. A Champagne Moment in the dying moments of a long hard season, and bottom place was averted.
2014Rob NicholsonOn 17th August 2014, in the club’s third appearance in the Hunters York & District Premier League Cup Final, the winning trophy was lifted for the first time by skipper Rob Nicholson. Fenner batted first and scored 212 in their 40 overs in the final at Harrogate CC. Studley Royal chased the runs in 38.3 to win by 6 wickets. Man of the Match Rob Nicholson scored an unbeaten 103, reaching his ’ton’ with a 6 in the final over.
2013Ben CoadOn 2nd June 2013, Ben Coad became the first Studley Royal player to appear in a Yorkshire CCC 1st team competitive match playing in the 40 over match v Gloucestershire. Ben bowled 8overs for 42 runs and dismissed New Zealand test player HamishMarshall to take his first wicket. He also took a great catch at midon. The Yorkshire CCC 150th Anniversary Book said “the day’s silver lining came in the form of a List A debut for young Ben Coad, an increasingly impressive and reliable bowler of medium pace from Ripon. His complement of overs produced a debut wicket and a consistency of length and line for which ‘Coady’ has become renowned in the Academy and 2nd team. Being ‘the pick of the bowlers’ on debut is something that few Yorkshiremen can boast”.
