At Studley Royal Cricket Club, the health and wellbeing of our players has always been a priority. As the game continues to evolve, so too must our approach to player safety. That’s why we’re pleased to confirm that the club will be formally adopting the ECB Recreational Cricket Concussion Guidelines with immediate effect.
Why this matters
Cricket is a sport enjoyed by players of all ages and abilities, and while serious head injuries are rare, they can and do happen. Concussion is a complex injury that isn’t always obvious at the time, and the consequences of mismanaging it can be significant. Clear, consistent guidance helps ensure that players receive the right care, at the right time.
By aligning ourselves with the guidance issued by the England and Wales Cricket Board, we are taking a proactive step to safeguard everyone who represents Studley Royal — from juniors coming through the ranks to senior players on a Saturday afternoon.
What the guidelines mean in practice
Adopting the ECB’s recreational concussion guidance means:
- Any player suspected of having a concussion will be immediately removed from play.
- A “when in doubt, sit them out” approach will be followed, without exception.
- Players will not return to cricket until they have completed the recommended graduated return-to-play process.
- Parents, captains, coaches and team officials will be supported with clear information on recognising symptoms and responding appropriately.
Importantly, these measures are about protection, not restriction. They are designed to ensure that players can enjoy cricket safely, both now and in the long term.
A shared responsibility
Concussion management works best when everyone is informed and aligned. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more information with players, parents and volunteers to ensure the guidelines are well understood and consistently applied across the club.
Cricket is a brilliant game, and at Studley Royal we want it to remain a positive, safe experience for everyone involved. Adopting the ECB Recreational Cricket Concussion Guidelines is a natural and necessary step in that commitment.
